Contemporary calf, modern rebacking preserving original boards; modern endpapers, one original endpaper at front, and two at rear preserved. Collates complete: pp. [4], 258, [2], 257-29.

Good. Boards worn, front deeply scratched, corners rounded; modern spine edges scuffed. Interior foxed and tanned throughout with some staining and edge wear; one pressed botanical, one page with a large repaired tear, dog ears throughout. Text generally clean and legible. Pencil bookseller notes to front. Period ownership signature to title page, subsequently crossed out; pencil date to title page. Lengthy pencil quote adjacent to title page, period ink note to rear endpaper.

John Dickins, the seller of record, was the first official book agent of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America

Provenance: To the rear (upside down), an ink note: "I Expect but Thomas went to Sea this Day December 6. 1794. as he then had a fair wind." Philadelphia was among the busiest American ports of 1794; the inscription records a farewell to someone departing by ship in the same month this volume would have reached booksellers.
